This article explains how to add your Ledger directly on polkadot.js. We highly recommend adding your Ledger through the browser extension instead, though. Click here to see the benefits and instructions.

TL;DR: Move to the bottom of this page to watch a quick video tutorial

  1. Start by installing the DOT app on your Ledger device by following the instructions from Ledger's Support page here

  2. Once installed, head to and select "Attach Ledger via WebHID". (Please note this will not work in Firefox, since it doesn't support WebUSB. Also, it won't work in the Polkadot extension)

Click the SAVE button once done.

  3. Next, open the Accounts page and you will see the "Add via Ledger" button

  4. Click the "Add via Ledger" button and a window asking you to input a temporary name for your Ledger, as well as Account Type and Address Index will pop up:

As a regular user, simply leave the default setting of 0 and 0. If you are an advanced user with several DOT accounts on a single Ledger device, enter the appropriate derivation path here.

Important: Remember the combination you used here (e.g. 0 and 0), because you will be asked to enter it every time you add your Ledger in the future. Any different combination (e.g. 0/1 or 1/1) will produce a different DOT address in your list of accounts.

  5. Your Ledger account will now appear in your list of accounts.
