This article explains how to add your Ledger directly on Polkadot-JS UI. We highly recommend adding your Ledger through the browser extension instead, though. Click here to see the benefits and instructions.

TL;DR: Move to the bottom of this page to watch a quick video tutorial

  1. Start by installing the DOT app on your Ledger device by following the instructions from Ledger's Support page here

  2. Then make sure your browser is updated.

  3. Once installed, head to Settings and select "Attach Ledger via WebUSD".

Click the SAVE button once done.

IMPORTANT: Selecting this option will disable the ability to add and use Ledger accounts from the Polkadot extension. In short it's not possible to add Ledger accounts both in the UI and the extension.

  4. Next, open the Accounts page and you will see the "Add via Ledger" button

  5. Click the "Add via Ledger" button and a window asking you to input a temporary name for your Ledger, as well as Account Type and Address Index will pop up:

As a regular user, simply leave the default setting of 0 and 0. If you are an advanced user with several DOT accounts on a single Ledger device, enter the appropriate derivation path here.

IMPORTANT: Remember the combination you used here (e.g. 0 and 0), because you will be asked to enter it if you need to re-add your Ledger in the future. Any different combination (e.g. 0/1 or 1/1) will produce a different DOT address in your list of accounts.
You can add the combination in the account's name as a reminder, for example "My Ledger 0/0".

If you get an error "No device selected", check your browser settings. Go to:

Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings > Additional permissions > USB devices

and make sure "Sites can ask to connect to USB devices" is selected. Then try again.

  6. Your Ledger account will now appear in your list of accounts.
